Officially named Megisti, meaning "the greatest," Kastellorizo has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The island takes its modern name from Castello Rosso, the Red Castle built by the Knights of St. John in the 14th century. Below the castle stands a rare Lycian tomb carved into the cliff, while the 18th-century mosque now serves as a folk art museum.
The island gained worldwide fame through the Oscar-winning 1991 film Mediterraneo, shot entirely on location here. Today, with around 500 residents, the elegant harbour mansions have been restored in vivid colours, echoing a time when the population reached 15,000. For travellers exploring Greek islands from Turkey, Kastellorizo is the most intimate of all the Dodecanese to reach.
Why Visit Kastellorizo?
Kastellorizo offers something rare among the Greek islands — genuine tranquillity and natural beauty untouched by mass tourism. Swimming means diving off harbour ladders into some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, where sea turtles glide past.
Dining means fresh-caught fish at family-run tavernas where the owner knows your name by your second meal.
No visit is complete without a boat trip to the Blue Grotto, a sea cave larger than Capri's, where sunlight refracts through turquoise water and floods the cavern with electric blue light. Combined with the colourful harbour, the rich history, and the warmth of the islanders, Kastellorizo is the most rewarding day trip from Kas.
